A Tale of Two Cracker Houses

June 29th, 2008

Cracker houses. I’ve lived in Florida since 1991 and have never actually seen any. Well, now I can say I’ve seen not only one, but two…in SecondLife. Okay, I know, I still haven’t actually seen any, but since my whole life is spent in front of a computer, this is probably the closest I’ll ever get to one anyway.
If someone had IM’d me to say “Hey, check out this great cracker house at an SL5B exhibit called “Undiscovered Florida”, I can guarantee you that I would have deep-sixed it and missed out on a great exhibit. The actual IM alluded to a tubing down the river ride. Again, I’ve never actually done that, and seriously doubt I will, but my avatar can handle anything, so off I went!

Acatemy Awards

June 22nd, 2008

I received this press kit that sounded interesting, so am posting verbatim:

Second Life is many things, but ultimately it is about the cultivation of creativity expressed in multiple forms to attract, enchant, inform and educate its residents.     The evidence of this is everywhere.  The untold hours devoted by you and your peers to enhance this world often go unrecognized.   That is about to change.

The “Acatemy Award” has been established to honor   unique and innovative applications of library sciences and resources throughout SL.   There is also a strong media contingent resulting in categories focused on SL movie development, acting and all facets of this intricate media format.

Imagined and envisioned by Lorelei Junot, these Awards will bring forth and into the spotlight, the very best SL has to offer.

The “Acatemy Award” will be presented at an official event, The “Acatemy” Awards Ceremony.  This event will be held in late July, Early August in the Library and Educational resources sims group here in SL and is open to any and all educational and library owners/operators in SL.

We do need your help to make this a huge success! Please do what ever you can to get the word out to your peers, students and patrons. Please share this news with your groups.

Most importantly, we need you to nominate those outstanding contributors to the educational and library presence in SL.  A nomination form is attached.

We would appreciate it if you would place the attached Acatemy Award display in your school or library.  It will call attention to the awards, and it has an informational note card, and a nomination form.

Please direct your questions to Krull Aeon.

Help us recognize those who have done so much to make SL a leader in taking education and library science into the digital age!

Thank you very much

PLSL Meeting Notes for May 18th

May 30th, 2008

Attendees: Eirene Janus, Leeori Alter, Lorri Momiji, Gareth Otsuka and Gi Tammas

Irina sent an IM with the most recent results of the Metellus survey http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pLzE8gUpAqG96-shZXndSOQ

Only 3 people had responded. Eirene has suggested offering $L to anyone who responds, perhaps $L100. We’ll try getting permission to set up the survey at busy malls, shops or clubs in the area to try and get more input.

Leeori Alter suggested having an event at Metellus to reach out to people in the area. Ideas included putting up a display about the services a library could offer to the neighbourhood, or perhaps a party. There seems to be a perception that shopping and going to clubs are the dominant activities. If we look at the

Caledon as an example, they offer discussions, storytelling and other events that invite people to interact. Building community might be a purpose Metellus could embrace. Perhaps we could put up a teleport board to connect people to other libraries in SL, local businesses, etc. We now have the SL Library Directory available at the gazebo (look for the purple ball). To help connect with interested people and get around the 25 group limit we could see about using an alternative ie. IMing a group of AVs, using a paid service, or creating a scripted object to send messages to members. Gareth will look up a website that he knows of for further information.

Lorri Momiji will be heading a couple of summer projects in Second Life™, and will be bringing her fall class into SL as well. Her summer projects include building their campus presence

Florida State University, building a research centre in Educators Coop and an Information Providers Study. The study details follow:

Hi, I’m doing a research study on information providers in Second Life; that is, folks who help others by providing information and answering questions. I’m exploring how information is provided in a virtual world and what is the impact of having an avatar on information interactions.

I’m interested in talking with information providers – such as librarians, teachers, mentors, nonprofit service providers – about what it is like to answer questions and provide information services in Second Life. I will pay 1000 Lindens to compensate for your time in an interview or focus group, plus an additional 500 Lindens if you choose to participate in a followup session.

If you’d like to participate in an interview or focus group, please contact me :

As many of you know there are a number of interesting and informative blogs and websites out there about Second Life™ and about groups/events in Second Life™. I thought I’d share a few of the ones I keep an eye on and invite you to share your favs.

The Metaverse Messenger - I save this to my desk top and read at my leisure.
Not Possible in Real Life - wonderful resource for SL art lovers. (Make sure you check out the Garden of NPIRL Delights at http://slurl.com/secondlife/the%20Dump%20Rezzable/22/153/26very cool!)
Orange Island - Check out their Games Week events.
SLWTF A Second Life Travelogue by Garth Goode – lots of fun

So what blogs or websites do you follow?

Meeting Notes from May 11, 2008

May 18th, 2008

Attendees: Eirene Janus, Leeorie Alter, Anita61 Anatine, Gi Tammas, Libbi Timeless

Eirene – her Model UN on Teen Second Life ™ is going well. Interested volunteers are always welcome.
- working on the Rez Libris site, getting the staff trained on how to post to the site.

Leeorie - waiting to hear if she has official permission to start a SL™ branch of her RL library (this is looking good)
- she already has a spot on the Talis Cybrary Island
- once she has permission for the branch, is hoping to create a committee that will work together in SL™ for about 2 hours a week of work time to get around any technical or time issues. This will also support the committee in building their skills.

- Also working on a joint project with Topeka Shawnee County Public Library and the State of Kansas Library on a Kansas authors project.

Metellus Project

- Irina has created the web survey , Eirene has passed out links to the survey to land/business owners on Metellus and Gi has put up a billboard that passersby can touch to take the survey. Hopefully Irina will be able to join us next week for an update.

- the area has seen a lot of growth lately, both residential and business

- the idea is to use the area (donated by Eirene) to experiment with designing and creating a public library in Second Life™ , testing out what does and doesn’t work, defining “what is a virtual library?”

- discussion on the “physical” requirements

- do you need a building?

- some type of visual definition of spaces

- areas to sit – acknowledging that people often animate their avs to mirror what they would do in RL ie. sitting when meeting with someone, laying down when tired

- structure adapted to manoeuvring in SL™

- familiarity leads to comfort

- “books” in SL™ can be difficult to use

- “what can a library offer in SL™ that an avatar would stick around for?”

- has to be more than a link to a website

- need to present info in an interesting way, with a broad appeal, unique is good

- Libbi suggested learning modules that could be done through a kiosk

- language can be a barrier – while many people speak English once you throw in SL™ speak and slang, things can get very confusing.

- Libbi has volunteered to research SL™ Lingo
